Key Largo’s Rowell’s Park to Get Major Upgrades With Monroe County’s $3 Million Grant

Residents of Key Largo homes are set to get major enhancements to one of the neighborhood’s favorite spots - Rowell’s Waterfront Park. This local favorite is an eight acre public park right on the bay. Residents are able to bring their dogs, enjoy a scenic walk, or watch the crystal clear waters at this beautiful gathering place. There are picnic tables for visitors to use, a designated swimming area, and a boat launch as well. This popular destination, however, is poised to get even more attractive with major enhancements funded by a nearly $3 million grant that was awarded to Monroe County this week by Governor Ron DeSantis.

The grant is a part of the Rural Infrastructure Fund and Community Development Block Grant program, and is part of a larger $4.4 million grant set aside for areas of southeast Florida. Of all areas receiving funds from the grant, Monroe County received the lion’s share - being awarded $2.9 million of the total $4.4 million available.

Plans for upgrades to Rowell’s Park include a variety of functional and enjoyment additions. On the functional side, the park will receive increased parking availability via a small lot - including pay-to-park stations for non-residents only - lighting and electricity enhancements, wi-fi capabilities, shared-use pathways, bathrooms, and a deceleration lane at the entrance to ease the ingress egress flow of traffic issues that it faces. Additionally, the park will receive a facelift via landscaping and art features, as well as a new playground, upgrades to the boardwalk, and more. The master plan for the project also includes boat and kayak launches, an upgraded swimming area with a zero depth entrance, a small splash pad, fitness zone, and multiple multi-use pavilions.

Rowell’s Park is already a popular spot for local festivals and events. Festivities are held here annually for events such as the Key Largo Bridge Run, the Fourth of July, and the Buccaneer Blast Regatta. As part of the grant, the public event lawn will get an upgrade as well, which will surely impact these events and more in a positive way.

If you live in Key Largo or are thinking of purchasing a home for sale in Key Largo soon, this new and improved waterfront park is sure to be at the top of your list to enjoy!
